[. . . ] Hard disk drive activity (Red 2-pin IDE_LED) This 2-pin connector is for the HDD Activity LED. The IDE LED lights up or flashes when data is read from or written to the HDD. Power/Soft-off button (Yellow 2-pin PWR) This connector is for the system power button. Pressing the power button turns the system ON or puts the system in SLEEP or SOFT-OFF mode depending on the BIOS settings. Pressing the power switch for more than four seconds while the system is ON turns the system OFF. Reset button (Blue 2-pin RESET) This 2-pin connector is for the chassis-mounted reset button for system reboot without turning off the system power. · 1-30 Chapter 1: Product introduction Reset Ground This chapter tells how to change the system settings through the BIOS Setup menus. BIOS setup 2 2-1 ASUS A8V-E SE 2. 1 Managing and updating your BIOS The following utilities allow you to manage and update the motherboard Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) setup. Refer to the corresponding sections for details on these utilities. Save a copy of the original motherboard BIOS file to a bootable floppy disk in case you need to restore the BIOS in the future. Copy the original motherboard BIOS using the ASUS Update or AwardBIOS Flash utilities. 2. 1. 1 1. Creating a bootable floppy disk Do either one of the following to create a bootable floppy disk. DOS environment a. At the DOS prompt, type format A:/S then press <Enter>. Windows® XP environment a. Click F i l e from the menu, then select F o r m a t A F o r m a t 3 1 / 2 F l o p p y D i s k window appears. Select C r e a t e a n M S - D O S s t a r t u p d i s k from the format options field, then click S t a r t t. Windows® 2000 environment To create a set of boot disks for Windows® 2000: a. Insert the Windows® 2000 CD to the optical drive. 2-2 Chapter 2: BIOS setup c. From the Open field, type D:\bootdisk\makeboot a: assuming that D: is your optical drive. Copy the original or the latest motherboard BIOS file to the bootable floppy disk. 2. 1. 2 Updating the BIOS The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) can be updated using the AwardBIOS Flash Utility. B I N and save it to a floppy disk. Save only the updated BIOS file in the floppy disk to avoid loading the wrong BIOS file. 2. 4. Copy the AwardBIOS Flash Utility (awdflash. exe) from the Software folder of the support CD to the floppy disk with the latest BIOS file. Boot the system in DOS mode using the bootable floppy disk you created earlier. When the A : > appears, replace the bootable floppy disk with the floppy disk containing the new BIOS file and the Award BIOS Flash Utility. The Award BIOS Flash Utility screen appears. Exit & Save Changes Exit & Discard Changes Load Setup Default Discard Changes F1:Help ESC: Exit : Select Item : Select Menu -/+: Change Value Enter: Select Sub-menu F5: Setup Defaults F10: Save and Exit Pressing <Esc> does not immediately exit this menu. Select one of the options from this menu or <F10> from the legend bar to exit. Exit & Save Changes Once you are finished making your selections, choose this option from the Exit menu to ensure the values you selected are saved to the CMOS RAM. An onboard backup battery sustains the CMOS RAM so it stays on even when the PC is turned off. Select Y e s to save changes and exit. If you attempt to exit the Setup program without saving your changes, the program prompts you with a message asking if you want to save your changes before exiting. [. . . ]
