Direct mode I Direct mode basics In direct mode, the radio operates without the network, so the radios are communicating directly with each other. Direct mode enables one-way calls both in the network coverage area and outside the network coverage area. Note: When direct mode is active, only those radio functions that do not require the use of the network can be used. For example, in direct mode you cannot send or receive status or text messages, make or receive network mode calls, use WAP or the data connection or activate fast menu items that require the use of the network. To use radio functions that require the use of the network, activate network mode and return to the network coverage area. Your radio has direct mode channels and each channel can have up to three groups. To receive a direct mode call that is made to the selected or a scanned group on the selected channel, the user must be in the coverage area of the transmitting radio. The radio coverage areas of different users can vary; even if you can hear a conversation, not all those speaking can necessarily hear you. For communication to be efficient, all the users should be within each other's radio coverage areas. Copyright 2005 Nokia. When you return to network mode, the selected folder and group will be those that were last selected in network mode. The bar above indicates the signal strength of the radio you are receiving communication from. The higher the bar, the stronger the signal and the better you can receive the communication. If a compatible direct mode gateway is available, is displayed in standby mode and the bar above indicates the signal strength of the gateway. If a compatible direct mode repeater is available, is displayed in standby mode and the bar above indicates the signal strength of the repeater. See Direct mode gateway and repeater on page 70.
