Please read this manual thoroughly before making connections and plugging in the unit. [. . . ] · Using another remote controller of the same type in the same room or using the unit near equipment that uses infrared rays may cause operational interference. · Do not put any object, such as a book, on the remote controller. The buttons of the remote controller may accidentally be pressed and drain the batteries. Placing the unit behind such doors may prevent proper remote controller operation. · If there is an obstacle between the remote controller and the remote control sensor, the remote controller will not operate. 8 Connecting the A-1VL Before Making Any Connections · Read the manuals supplied with your components. · Don't connect the power cord until you've completed all audio and video connctions. Caution: · Do not connect speakers having impedance values of 4 ohms or lower. · Do not connect more than one speaker cord to individual speaker terminals. · Unnecessarily long, or very thin speaker cables may affect the sound quality and should be avoided. Doing so may damage the A-1VL. RCA/Phono Connection Color Coding RCA/Phono connections are usually color coded: red and white. Use red plugs to connect right-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled "R"). Use white plugs to connect left-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled "L"). And use yellow plugs to connect composite video inputs and outputs. Analog audio Right (red) Left (white) Right (red) Left (white) · Push plugs in all the way to make good connections (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions). · To prevent interference, keep audio and video cables away from power cords and speaker cables. 1 Strip away approx. 5/8 inch (15 mm) of insulation from the ends of the speaker cables, and twist the bare wires tightly, as shown. 3 Unscrew the speaker terminal. 15 mm Right! Wrong! 4 Fully insert the bare wires. Connecting Your Speakers Connecting Your Speakers Connect the right channel speaker to the RIGHT speaker connector on the A-1VL, and the left channel speaker to the LEFT speaker connecter. Connect the "+" connector on each speaker to the "+" connectors on the A-1VL, and connect the "" connector on each speaker to the "" connectors on the A-1VL. Be sure to connect the positive and negative cables for the speakers properly. If they are mixed up, the left and right signals will be reversed and the audio will sound unnatural. Front Speaker (Right) Front Speaker (Left) 5 Screw the terminal tight. Changing the Speaker Impedance Value Setting The A-1VL allows you to set the speaker impedance values according to the speakers you use, adjusting the optimum frequency characteristics against speaker loads. We recommend you set the "SPEAKER IMPEDANCE SELECTOR" setting to "8 OHMS MIN. /SPEAKER" for speakers having impedance of 8 ohms or higher. Likewise, you may want to set the setting to "4 OHMS MIN. /SPEAKER" for speakers having impedance of 4 ohms or higher. 9 Connecting the A-1VL--Continued Audio Components Connecting a CD player Use an analog audio cable (RCA/phono) to connect the A-1VL's CD L/R inputs to the analog audio outputs on your CD player, as shown. CD L R OUTPUT L Connecting a Tuner Use an analog audio cable (RCA/phono) to connect the A-1VL's TUNER L/R inputs to the analog audio outputs on your tuner, as shown. TUNER L R AUDIO OUTPUT ANALOG R R L Connecting a Turntable The A-1VL's phono inputs are for use with moving magnet (MM) type cartridges. Use an analog audio cable (RCA/phono) to connect the A-1VL's PHONO L/R inputs to the audio outputs on your turntable, as shown. [. . . ] Remove the power cord from the wall outlet immediately and contact your Onkyo dealer. Audio There's no sound, or it's very soft. · When you use the A-1VL as a power amplifier (when the DIRECT function is turned on), the sound from the component connected to the preamplifier will be output. If you want to output the sound from a component connected to the A-1VL, or when you use the A-1VL as a preamplifier, use the DIRECT button to turn off the DIRECT function. · Make sure that all audio connecting plugs are pushed in all the way.
