[. . . ] Your first look through the eyepiece is likely to be in the daytime, and you might not be able to see the illumination of the double crosslines. When your eyes are dark-adapted, however, the illumination will be obvious. You should be able to see the LED itself light up even in the daytime when the illuminator is not coupled to the eyepiece. [. . . ] Aim at a star and focus the star image using the telescope's focuser. Now, both the main telescope and the reticle itself should be in sharp focus in eyepiece's field of view. Focusing with an Off-Axis Guider When using the illuminated reticle eyepiece with an off-axis guider, always focus the camera on a bright star before attempting to focus the star image in the reticle eyepiece. To focus on a bright star with your camera, use the telescope's focuser. Once the star image is sharp in the camera's viewfinder, then it's time to focus the star image in the illuminated reticle eyepiece. This is done by sliding the eyepiece in and out of the off-axis guider's eyepiece receptacle until the star image is sharp, then tighten the eyepiece setscrew. As described in the previous section, focus the double-crossline reticle by rotating the knurled top of the eyepiece Figure 1 Attaching the Illuminator All models except the #8482 come with a wireless illuminator. Two SR-44 batteries are already installed in the illuminator, except on the #8481 model (for which batteries are not included). To attach the illuminator to the eyepiece, simply thread the LED end into the threaded hole in the side of the eyepiece. Turn on the illuminator by rotating the knurled knob on the exposed end of the illuminator. Be sure to turn the illuminator off when it is not in use, otherwise the batteries will drain unnecessarily. The #8482 cabled eyepiece is for use with telescopes having a built-in power panel for LED-type illuminators such as Meade LX3 and LX5 telescopes, and many drive correctors. To attach the cable-type illuminator, thread the aluminum adapter on the end of the cable into the threaded hole in the side of the eyepiece. Then simply plug the cable into the jack on the telescope's power panel. A 0998 Replacing or Installing Batteries The illuminator of all Orion Illuminated Reticle Eyepieces runs on two SR-44 batteries (Orion part #2360), which are commonly available in camera shops and drug stores. To replace the batteries (or initially install them on the #8481 model), refer to Figure 2. Note that the positive (+) side of both batteries should face the LED end of the illuminator, and the negative (­) side of the batteries should face the end with the brightness control knob. Care and Cleaning of the Eyepiece Store your illuminated reticle eyepiece in a clean, dry, dustfree place. If dust builds up on the eye lens, simply blow it off with a blower bulb or lightly brush it off with a soft camel-hair brush.
