With PolaColor Insight software, you scan a positive or negative transparency (color slide, color negative, black-and-white slide, blackand-white negative). [. . . ] If you do not want to keep the change, click Undo Color Wheel Cast Removal on the Edit menu. 65 Adjusting color saturation Color saturation is the intensity, or purity of a color. The saturation tool enables you to make precise adjustments if the image is too faded or too strongly colored. If the image is undersaturated, increase the color intensity by moving the slider to the right. If oversaturated, decrease the color intensity by moving the slider to the left. Tip: Move the slider in small increments by typing a new value in the Saturation box. A saturation setting of -100 (extreme left position) creates a black-and-white (grayscale) image, which is stored as an 8-bit grayscale image when the image is scanned. If you do not want to keep this change, click Undo Saturation Adjustment on the Edit menu. 3 Try another Saturation value as needed. 66 Converting a color image to black-and-white You can use PolaColor Insight to save a color image as a black and white (grayscale) image. "B&W" appears above the slider in place of a numerical value. If you do not want to keep a change, click Undo Saturation Adjustment on the Edit menu. Identifying the brightest or darkest area PolaColor Insight provides tools for automatically or manually identifying points in the image that should be pure white (usually the brightest highlight) or pure black (usually the darkest shadow). After these points are identified, the software adjusts the tone of the entire image to extend from pure white to pure black. Note: These tools are disabled when "Process Final Scan with Work Space Color Profile" is enabled on the Scan tab of the Preferences box. Identifying the brightest highlight is useful for: · Brightening highlights that have a "muddy" look. 67 Identifying the darkest shadow is useful for: · Darkening shadows. Note: You may want the brightest highlight or darkest shadow to be a level other than pure white or pure black. 2 To identify the brightest highlight automatically, click the Auto Highlight button. To define the highlight manually, click the white eyedropper button and then click a bright highlight or another point in the image that should be pure white. The effect of the change becomes visible in the image and in the tone curve in the lower-right of the panel. (See "About tone curves" on page 71 for more information. ) To reset the brightest highlight to its original setting: On Macintosh systems, hold the Ctrl key and click the image. Then click Reset Curves Tools on the contextual or shortcut menu. 68 Identifying the darkest shadow 1 Click the Curves tab. 2 To identify the darkest shadow automatically, click the Auto Shadow button. To identify the shadow manually, click the black eyedropper button and then click a deep shadow or another point in the image that should be pure black.
